The biggest Challenge

After some philosophical discussion with friends, I've come to the conclusion that although a beautiful sentiment, finding good in others doesn't change much about who we are as people and how we go about our daily lives. Searching for good in others may also be something with which we have little control. So, I will post about the good in others and hope you will share your stories here too, but I will also be adding another spin to the idea.

Studying Counseling I've learned that we can't do much (if anything) to change others. We as humans only really have the power to change ourselves. So, I plan to refocus on what I will call the biggest yet most realistic challenge, finding good within. I do have a story about this for my first post and will share it soon. In the meantime, check out the video below.

One of my professors developed a video for his high school students in response to recent teen suicides in NJ. The idea was to let students know that they are not alone, and things get better. Start at 6:39, the music and message are most inspirational from there.

  2. on youtube, get the code for embedding and then paste in in the body of the blog. When the blog posts, it should be a video.

My take on all of this: There is good in everyone. And we can only change ourselves, but we can change how we look at others. For example, in changing our perspective we can see someone who is irritating as insecure, and work to make them feel more comfortable.

It's funny, I often find it easier to be patient and see the good in strangers, but struggle when it comes to close family. Not because I don't see the good, but because for some reason I let myself lose patience faster.

  3. Morning: Frustrated at work because boss comes down hard on you.

Afternoon: Presenting inteligent work that boss agrees with.

Realization: When people are hard on you it's beacuse they believe in you and think you have potential.

UNDERSTANDING makes me find good in Everyone, Everyday.

  4. Thanks for the comments! Rachel & 5d9ecd.. you both bring up a great point that when thinking alternatively about situations, good can be found.

I recently found myself assuming that my work wasn't appreciated when told that I should stop "working so hard," but when I thought about it through the context of this person's worldview it made me think that perhaps she was telling me this as friendly advice based on her own overworked experience.

Your insights could really go a long way in our world as intentions are often lost by misreading behaviors and speech. Perhaps if we could consider possibilities before jumping to conclusions, everyone would be a little better off.
